Dance Classes

Discovery - Ages 2 ½-3 ¾
Introduces toddlers and pre-K children to the world of expression through movement. Children dance to a wide variety of music utilizing gross and fine motor skills enhancing coordination, flexibility and creativity.

Preschool Dance - Ages 3-4
Preschool children are exposed to preparatory elements, movements, and the most rudimentary vocabulary in ballet and tap always in a fun and playful approach. Youngsters are introduced to appropriate deportment. Classes improve attention span and coordination.

Intro to Ballet - Ages 5-6
Introductory steps in ballet increase the physical and mental requirements while retaining a “fun” approach. More emphasis is placed on deportment. An awareness of music and rhythm is fostered.

Beginner Ballet or Jazz - Ages 6-7
Children in Beginner level Ballet, and Jazz classes, are taught an elementary vocabulary and technique in hour long classes which challenge coordination and concentration abilities. Discipline and respect are an integral part of the regiment in all the genres. Elements of musicality are actively discussed.

Beginner+ Ballet or Jazz - Ages 7-9
Advancing beginners are exposed to a wider vocabulary within their genre, Expectations are placed on better posture and an understanding and execution of vocabulary.

Intermediate Ballet I - According to proficiency
Dancers broaden their vocabulary and are challenged to achieve more technically correct positions and execution of steps. Focus is placed on developing flexibility and a sense of musicality. Understanding of the vocabulary is strongly encouraged at this level.

Intermediate II Ballet - According to proficiency
In the prepointe level, dancers are challenged by the combination of steps. Dancers at this level develop a firm grasp on the vocabulary, and demonstrate cleaner execution. Development of strength and correction of alignment is a strong component at this pre-Pointe level. Movement quality has more emphasis at this level.

Intermediate III Ballet - According to proficiency
Students continue to build strength. Vocabulary and more complex combination of steps are utilized. An expectation for a more fluid execution is established.

Intermediate IV - According to proficiency
Students at the Intermediate IV level exhibit grace and heightened coordination. The most challenging level of vocabulary is introduced at this stage including batterie, multiple turns, with emphasis on alignment, extension, turnout, musicality. Artistry is emphasized at this level.

Advanced - According to proficiency
Students practice the most challenging vocabulary in intricate combinations. Students work to develop speed, fluidity, grace, and musicality while maintaining attention to the technical requirements.

Adult Dance Classes
Adult programs offer personal challenge and promote the maintenance of and the return to, a healthy condition. Classes are available for everyone from the avid exerciser to the rank beginner.

Pointe
Pointe is a technique for the more advanced student enabling the dancer to stand on the tips of their toes producing a lighter, more graceful and ethereal look. Dancers must have proper alignment, knowledge, and strength to support themselves on pointe. All dancers will be informed when they are ready to begin pointe and are required to take a pre-pointe workshop in preparation of classes, (generally this happens about the age of 11-13. All dancers must take a minimum of three technique classes per week to maintain the necessary strength for pointe, however, four classes per week is strongly encouraged.

Variations
Variations Offered to Intermediate IV level ballet students and above, Variations class is an opportunity to expand technical ability and at the same time, develop a sense of artistry. Dancers will learn solo and small group variations from classic ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Raymonda, as well as originally choreography by our faculty.

Modern - Ages 10 - Adult
Modern dance technique utlizes the mind, body and spirit as means of expressive communication through movement. Our Modern class, beginner and intermediate, introduces the fundamental principles of movement and shape as it relates to time and space. Students will learn contraction/release of the torso, articulation of the spine, and a basic modern dance vocabulary. Modern emphasizes use of the floor to center and ground the movement, as well as breath and musicality, strong elements that affect movement quality. Students will learn exercises that build strength, increase flexibility and provide a foundation that can be applied to all dance styles. No previous dance experience is necessary, however, students are encouraged to take ballet which is the foundation of all dance forms.

Jazz - Hip Hop - Ages 6 - Teen
Jazz- hip hop is a contemporary form of dance that blends style and soul. A specific style of jazz dance, hip hop was inspired by the popularity of hip hop music. Hip hop includes a wide range of styles many drawn from inner city influence. Hip hop dance has a direct impact on the style of dance that many teens now use in social settings. Classes are taught with a more traditional jazz warm up to give students a foundation in the basic form of this genre. No prior experience is necessary.
